My Childhood

Bu Young Kim

I have four sisters and one brother. I went through World War II and the Korean War. It was a very difficult time for all the people. My family had an easier time than other Koreans. We never ran out of food, and we always had a place to stay.

I grew up in Seoul, Korea. Seoul is the capital of Korea. Seoul is a metropolitan city with many tall buildings; however, the city is surrounded by mountains. We lived in a large house in a residential area of the city.

My father was athletic. We enjoyed ice skating skiing, ping pong, and swimming with my father. He was a diving champion and a swimmer when he was in college. He swam until he was 92 years old, and he passed away at 94 years old.

I didn't go to kindergarten because World War II started, so I started in elementary school when I was seven years old. I used to walk to school with my sisters. In high school and college, I took public transportation. It was very reliable.

When I was in high school, the Korean War started. We were separated from my farther during the war. A lot of people died during the war. I have never forgotten it.
