Do the Write Thing

A New Beginning

Luis Lima

I'm from Guatemala. I was born in 1976 in Jalapa, Guatemala. When I was 7 to 14 years old, I went to school for six years and after that I went to high school for another three years. After the high school I went to take a Teacher Degree. My Father asked me if I wanted to go to college. I told him yes. I was trying to find something that I would really like. I told my mother I was going to Guatemala City because there were many different colleges there. I thought I could have a good career. I went to the city so I could work and study but the truth was I didn't like the capital. It was too crowded, noisy and dangerous for me. Later I decided not to go to college. I started working for myself, and after nine months I spoke to my father who was in California. I decided to come to the United States. Soon after I arrived in California I started working with my father and my older brother in a gas station for about two years. One day my brother decided to move to Boston. He didn't have to ask me twice. I wanted to move to Boston. I decided to come to Boston because there are better jobs and a better life here. Now I work at a glass company and I think my life is better that when I started working for myself or when I come to the United States for the first time.
