Do the Write Thing

Best Friend

A. Palomeque

My friend Gloria in Bolivia lived in a large house that had a beautiful garden. When she was little, she had everything she wanted--many toys, trips to interesting places and beautiful clothes. She grew up expecting to get the best of everything all her life.

But when she was 13 years old, her father died, and the family became poor. When the family became poor, Gloria had to work in a store as a salesperson, and she hated her work. She hated to get up early in the morning and hurry to work and, most of all, she hated having to worry and think about money all the time.

Some of Gloria's friends from the time when she was a little girl still encouraged her to come back to school and learn new skills, and she did. She discovered that she was very good at cutting hair, and she became a beautician. Soon she had a very enjoyable job, and she found that she loved her work. Gloria had her own shop. I was so happy to see her rich and independent.
