Do the Write Thing

In My University Times

Sunny Lee

During my university time in South Korea, I had many memorable episodes. In my class, we didn't have many women. My major was geology. So many women thought that it was boring and difficult. My classmates were 44 students, including two women.

Our class had so many trips together. When I wrote a graduate thesis, our group was one professor and four students. We had our own hammers and large backpacks (for rock samples). Everybody wore a large hat, and we looked at rocks only. We walked very slowly, because we had to collect all the rocks. We found many different rocks. Then we had to stop walking, and we used hammers and took rock samples. We continued this activity for three days.

After that, two policemen visited us. We had to go to the police station. Someone had called the police. The man said, "The
strangers must be terrorists. They were walking, looking at the ground. They wore large hats and had large backpacks. Because of the hats, I couldn't look at their faces."

We had to explain our work and show our I.D.s. We were very scared! Finally, we could leave the police office.
