When I was small I liked the circus.
I liked the animals the most and my favorite was the elephant.
During the show the enormous beast impressed everybody because of
its
weights its large size and its tremendous strength.
After of the show, I found the elephant behind the big top with its
leg
chained to a small stake was only a small piece of wood.
It scarcely was buried in the surface.
Even though the chain was thick it seems that it the animal is capable
of uprooting tree, it would be able to uproot the stake and to flee.
I wondered why the animal could not uproot the stake with the same
effort that I would need to break a match.
It is a mystery to me.
I was 9 or 10 years old and still believed in the knowledge of
grown-ups.
Then I asked my parents and my teacher for an answer.
I didn't have a coherent answer.
Someone explained that the elephant didn't get away because it was
trained. Then I asked, if it is trained, why is there a chain? But,
nobody knew. Later I saw a small elephant chained the same as the
elephant. Then I concluded that the elephant doesn't get away because
it
has been chained all his life.
I closed my eyes and imagined the big elephant when it was small
and
fastened to a small stake. I am sure that in this moment the elephant
pushed shook and tried to uproot the chains. With all its effort
it
couldn't the stake was very strong for the elephant.
I imagine that the first day it was exhausted by all this effort.
The
next day it tried again and again. Until one day, a terrible day,
the
animal accepted its impotence and it resigned to its destiny.
Conclusion
This enormous and powerful elephant didn't
get away because it thought
that it was impossible.
Everyone of us is a little like that elephant.
We think that we can't do many things. Sometimes we try and we are
not
able. We think that we can't or we won't ever be able do it.
We should overcome our limitations and try again.
