I am from Colombia and I have lived
in Worcester, MA, for 2 ½ years. I have been married for 1 ½ years.
My husband is from United States. We met in our work. He started
to work two months later than me in the same company. When I met
him I didn't speak English.
Sometimes I had to pass through his
area and he tried to speak with me, but I didn't understand anything,
and he doesn't speak Spanish.
We found the way to communicate together. We make signs with the
hands. That was so funny we laughed every time.
One day a co-worker
from Korea asked Todd: Do you like that lady? Todd said: I like
her but I don't know if she is single. Our co-worker
said: she is single. And a few minutes later, Todd was in my area,
he gave me a piece of paper with his phone number and he did signs
with his hands. I understood he wanted that I will call him.
I kept
the paper but I didn't call him. I thought: I'm not going to call
him. I don't speak English. What am I going to say to him?
Hi and Bye? He insisted so many times but I didn't call him. Then
Todd found a person to explain to me in Spanish that he was divorced
and he wanted to begin a serious relationship with me.
One day
I called him. I didn't understand him too much and I know he didn't
understand me too much either but it was the first step.
Then we bought dictionaries English-Spanish for each one. We used
them in our dates for some months. A few months later, we were
married. |
