My American Dream

Ynocencia Barriera

My name is Ynocencia Barriera . I was born in the Dominican Republic and I've been living here for the past 5 years. Ever since I remember, I have admired this great country and I knew that someday I would be living here and enjoying the American dream like many of my countrymen. I am the mother of four wonderful boys and I always wanted the best for them. My oldest son, he wanted to be a family doctor, but we didn't have the means or the money to help him become a doctor. I said to myself, "you better find a way to go the USA where you can be whatever you want to be with hard work," and the Lord helped me to achieve that dream.

It is not easy for anybody to come to this great country if you don't know the language and the customs are very different from mine. It is hard to get a decent job to help yourself and your family. I worked at odd jobs until I was hired by TJMaxx and earned enough money to send him to the University, where this year, to my great pleasure he became a doctor, "Magna Cum Laude." He is the first doctor in our humble family. We are all very proud of him and I know he will be a great doctor, because he loves his job and loves to help people. I also had the privilege to meet a very wonderful man, who gave me his support to help me achieve all my dreams and is always at my side, my husband, Domingo, whom I love with all my heart, is an army veteran from Puerto Rico. Very soon I am going to be an American citizen. I also had the privilege to send for two of my boys. The oldest is in his second year at WPI to become a civil engineer and the other will start soon in this prestigious Quinsigamond Community College where I am an English student. May God bless this great country!
