My story is about me. When I came to this country in May 8 1963 I was a
young girl of 16. Today I'm a women of 59. I'm married have a husband and
two sons. My dream is to learn to read and write English. When I came from
Italy at the age of 16, I went to Adams Street School and they put me in
the first grade. I cried because I didn't understand one word of English.
I
was supposed to go back to school in the fall. I never went back. I went
to work in a factory and I was at that job twenty nine years. I never was
sorry in all that time that I didn't go to school. I got married. I raised
two sons. My husband and I made sure that the boys got a good education
and they both could do good for themselves. I am very proud of them. For
myself when my factory closed I went to look for another job and I began
to have regrets. I couldn't fill out a job application. I realized that
without an education you can't go far. Now that I have this opportunity
to learn to write Engl ish I'm taking it!
