Do the Write Thing

My Best Friend's Mother

Shawn Gary

Hey how are you?
Not so good.
Why not?
Because my best friend's mother died.
I'm sorry.
It's not your fault; it's mine.
How is it your fault? Don't blame it on yourself.
Because I gave her cigarettes and she died from lung cancer.
But a couple of cigarettes aren't going to do that! Were you real close to her?
Yea she used to change my diaper when I was a baby.
Oh I wish I could make you feel better.
Nobody can, she was like my second mother!
I'm so sorry! I don't know what to say.
You can't say anything, and it hurts because the only person you want to talk to you can't.
I wish I could say I know how you feel but I don't.
But nobody knows how I feel. I'm leaving!
