Do the Write Thing

A Pharaoh’s Dream!

Gerald Williams

This is about a report I did on Ramses “The Great” who was an Egyptian pharaoh from thirteen hundred years B.C.E. It’s in a time before Christ. Ramses was the first king to form a peace treaty with his enemy and he constructed numerous monuments. He was drawn to my attention for my remarkable resemblance to him. One night after I’d been reading for many hours…

This year is 1274 BC; the weather is scorching as I lead my troops back home. We just barely survived an ambush attempted by the Hitties. I’m sure if reinforcements didn’t arrive when they did, we would’ve been left as scrap food for nature to devour. The bloodshed has been going on since my father, Seti, held reign before me. I’ve been king for four years and the Hittites are still the biggest enemy to Egypt. The feud is over the land that lines the Nile River. I refer to the territory as land of wealth, because it’s good for farming and breeding livestock…

It’s been twenty something years since I began my rule over Egypt. As I stand on my balcony gazing off into the sky, my frame of mine is perplexed over the meeting I arranged with Hattusilis. I’m eager to end the file behavior between the Hittites and my people. I will request for Hattusilis to offer his daughter’s hand in marriage to assure our peace. If all goes accordingly I’ll be the first king to achieve a truce….

I never once stopped to speculate about living to the age of ninety. I surpassed all pharaohs throughout my sixty something glorious years of ruling over Egypt. I have constructed massive monuments, conquered foes, made allies with others and sired a hundred-fifty children with over thirty women. I have no doubts as I grow near my death about my legacy being carried on through my offspring. I will close my eyes for a last time knowing my name will forever be embellished as “The Great”…

As everything fades black, I suddenly awaken! For a moment I was enfolded in time. I’m left pondering over the idea that Ramses is an ancestor of mine. With the drive and ambition I possess, could I be a part of the legacy?
