Do the Write Thing

Letter from the Editor

Dear Student Authors,

It’s always hard to believe that yet another year has rolled by, but here we are, holding a new edition of “Do the Write Thing” in our hands – this time, it’s number seventeen! Now, as with every preceding year, the first words that I would like to offer as an editor are familiar, yet infinitely heartfelt: “Congratulations to all of the authors whose work was selected to grace the following pages.”

By now, it seems that even self-proclaimed computer illiterates, myself included, have warmed to the wonderful world of the electronic submission and evaluation. Since its progression to the internet, “Do the Write Thing” has only grown by leaps and bounds – this year saw over 300 submissions! Also, we are always proud to tell you that our students, as a part of the Editorial Teams, have been heavily involved in the final selection of this year’s published pieces. This is your triumph, students, it is only right that you should be the largest part of this project.

Since the inception of “Do the Write Thing”, and including this year, each and every submission has been truly a pleasure to read and experience. We on the Editorial Board have been astounded by the sheer creativity and talent we have seen in every student this year, and we are sure that the selection process must have been agonizing indeed. The freedom with which you, the students, give of yourselves never ceases to amaze!

It is essential to remember that although our authors are of utmost importance, the dedication of each member of our program staff as been indispensable throughout the publication process of “Do the Write Thing”. Thank you, as always, to the Editorial Team and Leaders! Thank you to each teacher who inspires his/her students to take a chance in writing! Thank you to the SABES staff, and especially to Cathy Gannon, Jacqueline Lynch, and Joanne Harrington for your tireless endeavors in making this process so much smoother! Everyone in our program has pitched in, and so we offer this gratitude to all.

Despite how the years change the face of “Do the Write Thing,” the tenacity and imagination with which it is created has never wavered. When you read this publication, students, you must promise us only one thing: You’ll never put down that pen and stop sharing yourselves through the magic of writing!

For the Editorial Board
