  1. Encourage your students to use their imagination. Have them incorporate feelings and life experiences rather than just facts (please, refer to the Creative Writing Ideas packet).
  2. One of the goals of this publication is to give adult learners a voice in their communities. Suggest a variety of writing topics to your students. Examples of submissions could be:
    Special learning from personal experiences
    Compose a song or make up new lyrics to an existing song
    Personal opinion
    A short 5-minute skit
    Storyboard A rap
    Poetry
    Humor
    Cartoon
  3. You, the teacher are the key to a successful submission. All writings will be published (in print and online) as received. No editing will be done after pieces are submitted
  4. Please review your students’ writings by evaluating ideas and content, organization, sentence structure, mechanics, word choice and students’ voice. (See the Rubric )
  5. Review your students’ writings for appropriateness (see General information). Use your good judgment on which content/topics are appropriate. Remember that the length of the writing must not exceed 600 words.
  6. Take the time to provide feedback to your students before their writings are submitted. Students are encouraged to peer edit and evaluate their writings based on the same rubric that the Editorial Board will use to select writings for publication.
  7. All teachers whose students will submit writings are encouraged to attend the writing workshop on October 4. The content of this workshop includes learning to use the DTWT Rubric.
  8. Please assist your students to submit their writings electronically and to completely fill out the necessary forms to complete their submissions. Forms can be downloaded from the DTWT web-site
    a. Submit the writing electronically.
    b. Complete the submission by completing and mailing the” Student Author/Artist Information Form.” Within one week of electronic submission of the writing.
    i. Print the information form
    ii. Sign it
    iii. mail a hard copy of this form to: SABES, Joanne Harrington, QCC, 670 West Boylston Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
    c. To be part of the editorial board: Complete and submit electronically the “Editorial Board Form.”
  9. 9. All entries will be posted on the DTWT web site for evaluation purposes. No names will be posted without signed permission.
  10. Entries will appear with the name students specify in the “Student Author/Artist Information Form“(initials, first name, etc.) if a written permission has been received.
  11. Please inform your students that once their entries are posted on the DTWT web site they will be available worldwide for viewing. This means that anyone has access to their writing. Therefore, students may not wish to have their names posted on the web site.
  12. Encourage your students to use their imagination and submit artwork for the cover of DTWT. Submit hard copy with signed”Student Author/Artist Information Form” to: SABES, Joanne Harrington, QCC, 670 West Boylston Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
