I Was There When Communism Fell

I am from Bulgaria. My wife and I arrived in the USA in 1998. We were very happy because we had not seen our son for 6 years and we were very curious to see the big difference between our country and the USA, between our culture and the American culture. We have been in the United States for about 9 years and definitely can say that we love America. We love our country too, but we do like the communist governments. The communists dictated in our country more than 50 years. Bulgaria was ruled by the Bulgarian Communist party, whose power feel in 1989 officially, but its dictatorship extended later, because the communists tried to transform itself, changing its Party name into Bulgarian Socialist Party and was continuing to rule. Before 1989 and later the communists were continuing to plunder all that they can. The police and judicial system were together with them. All of them are the richest people in Bulgaria now. None of them have been sentenced so far.

The corruption continues. Thanks to the democratic forces in our country, there is noticeable progress in the economy and decrease of organized crime. Thanks to the democratic forces, Bulgaria became a member of NATO in 2004 and in 2005 the Europe Union approved our membership for 2007, subject to the implementation of reforms, especially the cleaning up of corruption and organized crime. In 2007 Bulgaria joined the EU. Our country is an all with the USA and I am proud of that.
