Do the Write Thing

My Heart Was There When it Happened

Victor Mendonca

My name is Victor Mendonca and I was born in Portugal. In June 1960 I became a U.S. citizen. I was very happy because I was able to go to the polls and cast my vote. November of 1960 was the first time for me to participate in a presidential election. My vote went to former President John F. Kennedy. At that time I was living in Cambridge, MA.

On the morning of November 22, 1963, I went to a Gulf Station at the intersection of Prospect and Hampshire Streets in Cambridge, MA. I rented a U-Haul trailer to load our belongings and move to Watertown, MA. In the early afternoon of the same day, I was returning the trailer. As soon I was near the door of the office, Walter, the attendant of the station, was coming out with his hands up to his head, crying, "The President was shot in Dallas, Texas." At that moment I felt like my heart was with the President. Since that day, every year on November 22nd, I always think about the President for this reason.
