Do the Write Thing

Growing Up in Chardonnieres

Marie Jean Sebastienne

I started school when I was seven years old. I walked to school with my sister. My class had forty students. Everybody wore a uniform.

After elementary school the students went to the different villages for high school because we didn't have a high school in my village. Now the parents had more problems with the students. Some students stayed for a week and came back on weekends. Some came home everyday. The students studied grammar, sociology, science, philosophy, math and history etc. Sometimes a mean teacher made the students dislike school. The school year began in September and ended in June. The vacation started after the school year was over.

Marie Jean Sebastienne is from Haiti and has been studying in the Power Program for two years.

“I have been here for seven years. I’m married and I have two kids. My son is fourteen years old and my daughter is five years old. I’m working in the Five Stars Hospital in Woburn. I’m a hard worker, and my job can be tough at times. My goal is to learn better English because I want to become a nurse. When my kids finish school and grow up, I will go back to help the people in my country. I feel my goals are very important and I will accomplish all of them.”
